Interview with Alex Mitchell

Last week saw the end of the September 2009 format, with the SHONEN JUMP Championship in Nashville. Despite being the last event of the format, there was a surprising amount of vareity on show, with all sorts of Decks doing well. One of the most popular, a Spacechip Deck that used cards like "Lord British Space Fighter" and "Jade Knight," made it to the Top 16. That deck was piloted by Alex Mitchell, who got as many compliments on his fashion choice as he did his Deck. After the event I caught him for a quick chat about his experience.

Hi Alex, congratulations on your recent finish at SJC Nashville. Before we talk about you and the Deck, let's get on to something that everybody's dying to know about, the suit! What made you dress in such a unique way for a Yu-Gi-Oh! event?
The suit was an original thing on my part. I wanted to stand out, and do something crazy. At first I just dressed in vests, button up shirts and ties but then I thought I'd take it up a notch.

Let's talk about the SJC now. For somebody who's never been to one of these events before, what's it like? What are the players like to play against? Is it a lot more difficult than say, a 200 man Regional?
It's a different pace, not as thrilling as Nationals, but it ranks pretty high; the players are different, and the decks are different as well. It's not much more difficult however, because whether you play at home or at a event a Match is a Match.

What kind of Decks did you play against during the Swiss rounds? Was it the usual mix of Lightsworn, Blackwings etc. or were there any unusual Decks you had to face?
I played 2 Lightsworn, a Twilight Zombie, a Synchro cat, Gladiator Beasts, Dragons, Zombies, and a Deck with "Convulsion of Nature" and "Archfiends Oath."

As awesome as the suit was, your Deck was also quite different to what players are used to seeing. Can you tell us a bit more about the Deck and how it works?
The Deck is made to play with its utility. What everyone else saw was an OTK, but every card had a purpose and anything could be played at any moment.

Had you considered cards like "Cyber Dragon" and "Cyber Eltanin?" What made you not add those to your build?
I tried to add both, but it interfered with my main goal to ensure my anti meta ("Royal Oppression") didn't interfere with my own plays. I even gave "Archlord Krista" a try since I did play triple "Shining Angel," and triple "Honest" at the time, but that flopped in testing.

The Deck has lost a copy of "Honest" now with the new Forbidden and Limited List. How important a change is that, and what are you planning to replace that third copy with?
I didn't always win with "Honest" so I lost one out, which is an easy one to replace. With what..... well that's a secret!

What kind of Decks are you expecting to see at the start of the new format?
Lots of things; X-Saber's, Blackwings, Gladiator Beasts, Monarchs, Plants, Plasma Control and Lightsworn variants to name but a few.

Are you hoping to attend the 75th SHONEN JUMP Championship in New Jersey?
I'll go if it doesn't conflict with school, yeah.

Finally, have you got any tips for players out there who are trying to do well at bigger events?
Play what you want but the meta is a good way to get better. However meta isn't the only way. You play what you feel you want to play. Many times did I see someone say "I could have played a really cool Deck" but they busted money on the meta. Just play something fun and enjoy the game, people who truly enjoy it get farther than you think.
